The area can become inflamed or infected, often from viral respiratory illnesses like colds or the flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mild to severe earache<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muffled hearing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Occasionally, people experience a <a href=\"https:\/\/entandallergyspecialists.org\/ent\/eardrum-perforation\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/entandallergyspecialists.org\/ent\/eardrum-perforation\/\">ruptured eardrum<\/a> due to the pressure buildup in the middle ear. If this happens to you, you may hear a loud pop, followed by an instant decrease in pain and pus-like drainage from your ear.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"swimmers-ear\">Swimmer\u2019s Ear <\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Swimmer\u2019s ear, or otitis externa, occurs when the ear canal becomes inflamed. Symptoms can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tender outer ear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Itchy ear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ear discharge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Swimmer\u2019s ear is sometimes caused by allergy or infection. However, certain risk factors make you more prone to getting the condition, such as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Frequently cleaning your ear canal with a cotton swab<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Going for regular swims outside or at a local pool like Florence Family Aquatic Center<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wearing hearing aids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly using earplugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"treatment-options-for-ear-infections\">Treatment Options for Ear Infections<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>If your ear infection is caused by a virus, you might just need to rest and let it run its course. Your doctor may recommend Tylenol\u00ae or Advil for the pain. While many ear infections can clear up on their own, it\u2019s important to seek medical attention if you have symptoms. If it\u2019s caused by bacteria, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection and keep it from spreading.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"treat-ear-infections-to-avoid-mastoiditis\">Treat Ear Infections to Avoid Mastoiditis<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Mastoiditis is a rare infection of the mastoid bone, which is located behind and below your ear. It is usually caused by an untreated ear infection. It can occur at any age but is <a href=\"https:\/\/pedsinreview.aappublications.org\/content\/39\/5\/267\">most often seen in children under two.<\/a> Symptoms include severe pain behind the ear, fever and headache. If left untreated, mastoiditis can lead to serious conditions including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meningitis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blood clots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Facial nerve paralysis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Mastoiditis often requires intravenous antibiotics and surgical draining of the fluid.
