Children are more likely to experience ear infections than adults because their Eustachian tubes are smaller and more likely to experience fluid buildup.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Allergies. <\/strong>Having allergies can cause enlarged adenoids<strong>. <\/strong>These can block the Eustachian tubes and <a href=\"https:\/\/entandallergyspecialists.org\/ent\/ear-infection\/\">lead to fluid buildup<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respiratory tract infections. <\/strong>Ear infections often develop after a virus like a cold.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Family history<\/strong>. Being prone to ear infections can run in families.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Smoking. <\/strong>Exposure to cigarette smoke from smoking or secondhand smoke can increase the risk of ear infection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medical conditions. <\/strong>Having asthma or cystic fibrosis can put you at a higher risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Children in daycare, school or with older siblings also appear more likely to be at risk for ear infections. This is likely due to the fact that they are exposed to more germs.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"preventing-ear-infections-in-adults\">Preventing Ear Infections in Adults<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>If you are an adult who experiences ear infections, consider the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Quit smoking and avoid exposure to cigarette smoke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash your hands with warm water and soap regularly to avoid germs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry your ears after showering or swimming at Fort Thomas Swim Club.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your ears clean. However, don\u2019t use a cotton swab or stick anything in your ear to do so. This can push wax further into your ear canal and cause more problems. Instead, gently wipe your ear with a wet washcloth while bathing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"preventing-ear-infections-in-children\">Preventing Ear Infections in Children<\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teach your children to wash their hands regularly, especially in environments where they are exposed to more germs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t smoke or allow anyone else to smoke around them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you bottle-feed your child, make sure to do so at an upright angle.
